Prathiksha - Kakkavayal Awaiting in hope

Establishment:  July 1, 2017
Location:  Nazareth Convent, Kakkavayal

Prathiksha is an effort to empower and uplift the status of women, children, Indigenous people, senior citizens and other marginalized groups in the Wayanad District, Kerala. The ecologically balanced campus of Nazareth Convent seeks to inspire everyone who visits the organization to seek an internal balance of mind, body and spirit. Prathiksha is the bridge to build the gap between the target groups and the mainstream population.

The empowerment programs address:

  • Denial of welfare schemes & basic necessities
  • Unjust treatment
  • Domestic violence
  • Other legal and economic deprivations etc.

Our achievements:

  • Approach roads
  • Drinking water facilities
  • Reclaimed lands encroached by others

How we do these:

  • Conduct awareness programs on the rights and legal changes from the government.
  • Collaborate with like-minded NGOs.
  • Interact regularly with the court system, government offices, officials and agencies.

We believe:

  • Domestic issues will be resolved through mediation when possible, and through legal avenues when mediation fails.
  • Women, children and elderly feel confident to approach us to share their problems and find solace.
  • Use of alternate redressal dispute system to maintain peace and harmony.
  • Indigenous people will understand and feel empowered to exercise their rights.
  • In the long-term, these efforts will effect systemic change in our target groups, insuring an equitable and just place in society.

The programme coordinator, Jomol Joy, an attorney, is recognized officially by the state government of Kerala to intervene in family issues and offer psychological and legal assistance to victims of domestic violence.
